Abstract
The purpose of this capstone is to discover the importance of identity and how to use art as a vehicle to explore identity. Having a resilient identity will lead to the motivation to learn, an overall well being and the ability to deal with social problems. Examples of social problems may include crime, substance abuse and unhealthy sexual practices. According to my research the first step to education should be to support and develop students identity in order to create active citizens, and an overall healthy society. Therefore, I decided create an identity workshop at the local Boys and Girls Club in seaside. The Workshop was titled, Exploring My Identity Through Art. The purpose of this workshop was to have the youth begin exploring their present and future identity. I wanted the youth to begin thinking about who they are and who they want to become giving them the agency to be whoever they wish to be. This workshop had several art activities that helped the individual to explore their identity. At the end of the 5 sessions the students created a book with all their activities along with a mask that was exposed at the Boys and Girls Club final art presentation that was viewed by their family and other community members.
