Abstract
There are different teaching methods within our educational system. The thematic unit is a teaching technique that utilizes a portion of the school day to connect literacy, mathematics, science, history, and art to the various aspects of life. These aspects include the social sciences, economics, geography, and the Earth sciences. Through use of online databases, Ebscohost and Jstor, and interview with two teachers in the Monterey Bay area, this capstone examines the advantages of teaching the thematic unit. Research strongly supports the thematic unit instruction by stating its benefits in an array of categories, including an increase in student focus, student-based practical learning and teacher freedom.
