Abstract
The purpose of this capstone project was to explore physical education within elementary schools. Physical education (PE) within the U.S. is slowly being cut due to lack of funding, which means limited time spent with a certified PE instructor for students. This lack of physical activity (PA) is important because the practice of being physically active in childhood leads to a lifetime of PA. Three teachers and one principal were interviewed in order to get an in-depth look at how PE is being addressed in schools throughout the area. It was found that teachers have a lack of time, funds, and resources for PE within the school day. A packet of lesson plans that teachers could easily incorporate into their curriculum to promote PA without sacrificing learning time was created. It became evident that PA can be a reality within the classroom with the proper support for classroom teachers.
