Demeter was a Monterey Bay area feminist newspaper published from April 1, 1978 to Summer 1985. It explored feminist issues and concerns and provided information on organizations and activities of interest to the local women's community. Topics addressed include sexuality, race, gender equality, sexism, gay rights, reproductive rights, and violence against women. Issues also include poetry and articles about books and music.

These newspapers are part of the Demeter newspapers and ephemera collection, which is available in the Library's Archives and Special Collections. In addition to newspapers, the collection includes posters, programs, and other materials related to Demeter Resources, a nonprofit women's organization founded in 1978, dedicated to the growth of the feminist community and the development of women's culture in the Monterey Bay area. The newspapers date from 1979 to 1985, with other materials dating from 1979-1981.
