Description
Sonny Wun tells of how his parents came to the Salinas Valley before and after the World War II. He tells of how it was growing up in Chinatown on Soledad Street as a young boy and of some of his favorite memories as a little boy walking down the street, what his home on 10 Soledad Street looked like and smelled like, how Chinatown became a parade when the Ford Ord soldiers came into the bars, and how the community took care of each other and each other's children. Sonny attended Salinas High and graduated in 1967. During his time there he felt directly discriminated a lot of the time. After high school Sonny served in the military for two years after being drafted. After his time in the military he was convinced by his father to come back to the Salinas Valley. Once he arrived he began to attend Hartnell but never graduated because he began to work full time at the postal office after only completing one semester. Although the years have passed Sonny still remembers the smells and sounds of Chinatown and wishes he could go back to the time of his childhood when he was growing up on Soledad Street.
