This project documents LGBTQ+ experiences on the Central Coast and Salinas Valley. Interviews in this collection include individual life histories that intersect with historic movements and events. These personal accounts provide a deep portrait of each narrator. They also delve into the formation of local advocacy groups, and encompass various generations within the community. Student interviewers prepared for their research by studying oral history theory. They collaborated with Rainbow Speakers, Salinas Valley Pride and the Monterey Peace & Justice Center to reach out to local narrators.

The family still has a hard time accepting Victor for who he really is. Victor's father had hoped since Victor was born to be able to raise his only son in a near image of himself. The reality is that his father was raised with strict ideas about gender. The hardest moment in Victor’s life is having the courage to come out to the family and share that he doesn’t fit the social norms that they expected of him.
