Context of Activity or Assignment

Students select a recent instance of misinformation or disinformation (within the last 6 months) and use the original source material for analysis. The goal is to develop critical analysis skills in identifying, examining, and addressing instances of mis/disinformation in contemporary media. The analysis requires applying concepts (populism, partisanship, group membership, etc.) to explain its creation and spread.

Purpose of Activity or Assignment

To examine the assumptions, intent, and motivations behind the creation and spread of disinformation. To apply sociological and psychological factors to explain the virality and acceptance of false information.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips

Students may spend time trying to debunk or prove the conspiracy theory instead of analyzing why people believe it. Instruct students that their sole task is to explain and justify the motives (epistemic, existential, social) using specific quotes from the post and comments.
