Abstract

This qualitative action thesis is a case study of diverse middle school students' perspectives on educational and social equity at a central coast California school. Its purpose is to open up dialogue, create awareness and bring democratic change that empowers students of all backgrounds to participate freely in their education. Student data revealed a highly segregated social environment that created disrepspect and hostility between groups. Certain ethnic groups were perceived to have more status and privilege than others. Multicultural strategies are recommended to assist students in breaking down stereotypes and creating an educational environment that is sensitive to the issues of marginalized students.
