Abstract
Monterey County Department of Social Services is a government agency that provides over seventy programs to Monterey County residents including public assistance programs, social services for children and their families, employment services, and assistance for seniors, military veterans and adults with disabilities. The Human Resources branch is responsible for overseeing the agency’s employment-related functions. The problem being addressed is the unconscious bias that exists in Human Resources decision making about hiring new employees. This can result in a potentially well-qualified candidate for a job position to get denied. Hiring unqualified individuals will ultimately affect the residents of Monterey County being served. The purpose of this educational training project is to increase awareness of the unconscious bias that exists in the functions of Human Resources. The training will be offered to the Human Resources employees. The training will use a pre and post survey questionnaire to determine if the training was effective and how it could be improved for future employees while taking the training.
