Abstract

Catholic Charities Diocese of Monterey focuses on providing services to the community. The problem addressed is that not enough Spanish speakers are accessing services. This issue can lead to disadvantages that can affect the living conditions and quality of life of these individuals. The contributing factors are staff demographics that do not reflect the community, communication barriers with clients, and the process of accessing services is difficult to navigate. As a consequence, risk of homelessness increases, health issues, and the lack of access to healthy food. A resource fair drive-thru event was held on the east side of Salinas. The drive-thru resource fair had different agencies who have staff and information in Spanish in order to advertise their services and for the Spanish-speaking community to learn about services that they can benefit from. The event was a success with fourteen families participating at the resource fair drive-thru. From the fourteen families, ten families completed the post-survey in which they highly rated the event and expressed their want for this event to continue in the future. A recommendation for the agency is to continue having resource fairs through different locations in Monterey County to have that face-to-face interaction with the community. Another recommendation is to make sure the date of the event does not fall on a holiday or a week where there is a holiday since it makes it difficult for agencies to join the event on those types of occasions.
