Abstract

Due to the influx of immigrants coming to the United States, there has been an increasing numbers of English language learners in public schools. Several legislations have been passed by Congress to support the English language learners to make a transition to learn English. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 and the recent Common Core Standards, in particular, have shaped the English language instruction. This senior capstone examines the challenges faced by English language learners and identifies ways to assist their learning (e.g. classroom accommodations, programs, etc.) through extensive literature review, student surveys, and teacher interviews. The findings indicate that English language learners face academic, cultural, and identity challenges while acquiring English as a second language.
