Abstract

The lack of opportunity given to the students to be physically active leads them to be at risk for many health problems. Physical education (P.E) is provided at many after school programs, but students are not adopting what they learn to their daily lifestyles. The Fitness for Life program was implemented by Starlight Elementary and is making a difference in the community by engaging and offering more physical activity programs for students. Interviews of coordinators, P.E. teachers and regular classroom teachers provided positive insights into the program. Students surveyed, however, had one common change they wanted to see in the program. Students at Starlight Elementary felt that Fitness for life should offer more sports themed activities. As a result of this project, it was learned that if Fitness for Life offered a variety of sports and physical activity games students were more likely to be engaged and make changes in their lifestyles. Therefore, several engaging activities were created for a newly formed group in response to student input that demonstrated how physical activity could be fun and shared at home with families.
