Abstract
One of the major setbacks that migrant parents are faced with is the language barrier, which makes them feel inadequate when it comes to helping their children with school work. Migrant parents need to be reassured about the potential differences that they can make by thoroughly involving themselves in their child’s education. Miscommunication between the parent and teacher may arise, making the relationship weak and affecting the students’ academic success. Rather than allows this to happen, parents should be taught and informed about ways in which they can become effectively involved in their child’s education. A way in which parents can learn different ways of having fun, yet learning with their child is through a family night hosted by a school. The family night, which consists of mathematics, is hosted in their native language, helping the parent to fully engage and comprehend that they can indeed help their children with schoolwork. The games, fun and interactive, have a tremendous positive impact in the way that children learn and are great for the entire family. Migrant parents are crucial assets and need to be encouraged to participate in any way possible, even if their involvement occurs behind closed doors.
