Abstract
This project provides a collection of materials to fifth grade students so that they may participate in an after-school fitness program. This fitness program includes the use of a FITBIT device combined with monthly workout routines, health tips and nutritional recipes. The purpose of instituting this program is to lessen the rates of childhood obesity as well as help students set and achieve lifetime fitness goals. This project is a pilot study that focuses on creating healthy habits for fifth grade students as they mature and move into a more independent lifestyle. According to U.S. national data, only 42% of children aging from 6-11 years old meet the national guidelines of 60 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous PA. These statistics get even more disappointing when that percentage drops to 8% for 12-15 year old adolescents (Crouter, 2). The authors of this project hope to positively influence the students by promoting a lifelong fitness lifestyle.
