Context of Activity or Assignment

Students analyze a contemporary conspiracy theory discussion from the r/conspiracytheories subreddit by reading a selected post and its comments. They then apply a sociological framework of belief motives (epistemic, existential, and social) to explain why people might believe in the theory, supporting their analysis with direct quotes. The assignment concludes with a discussion of the ethical impacts on wider society.

Purpose of Activity or Assignment

To develop skills in applying sociological theory (epistemic, existential, and social motives) to real-world, user-generated data. To examine underlying assumptions and biases in online discourse. To evaluate the broader ethical implications of conspiracy beliefs on society.

Potential Pitfalls and Teaching Tips

It is recommended that the instructor creates a shared Reddit account for the class and provides the username and password to the students.
