Diversity Statement

Our Writing Waves Editorial Staff aims to compile and publish works that push on the confines of genre, moving beyond “classic” publication ideology/pedagogy. This includes featuring and raising up texts that experiment and express; gender, sexuality, class, race, age, education, ability, and culture. This goal is a benchmark to showcase literature and scholarship across the diverse landscape that is CSUMB’s student-body.

Write the Wave.

2025 Writing Waves Redux Statement

We here at Writing Waves wish to acknowledge both previous and continued failures of our society at large. We hope to promote and see change in our future. We would like to first Acknowledge the fact that our Campus and Country as a whole once belonged to many indigenous communities who had their land and lives taken away by a brutal government, and westernized society at large. We hope that others continue to remember the loss of indigenous communities that took place during western colonization. We want to remember, and hope our community largely acknowledges and reconclines those that once lived where the campus of CSUMB is located. Not only in our country, but throughout the variety of continents our text is received, so many have faced suffering by the hand of a largely white supremacist society with its many harmful institutions.

We also want to acknowledge that our current political climate of 2025 has seen a concerning backlash from a large portion of our society to ideas and celebration of the diversity of our many different communities. We strongly denounce efforts that aim to: censor, marginalize, or in any way attack those who have been historically discriminated against, and openly wish to promote a community (and society) of love, understanding, and tolerance.
